Risk Assessment and Safe Use of now>press>play
In order to ensure safe use of now>press>play in your classroom, here are some simple ways to use the equipment carefully and responsibly. These tips help staff and children work together to enjoy an Experience while looking out for each other.
1. Preparation Before the Session
-
First Aid Readiness:
Ensure first aid bags are available and accessible in the room where the equipment will be used. -
User Agreements:
Confirm that all children and parents have signed user agreements for using the equipment, outlining responsibilities and safety expectations. -
Equipment Check:
When using battery-powered headphones - Staff should verify that batteries in devices are fully charged or replaced before sessions. Children in upper Key Stage 2 (NPP Sparks) may assist under supervision.
When using rechargeable headphones - Staff should ensure that all headsets have been charged ahead of the session. -
Classroom Setup:
If furniture needs to be rearranged, staff should support children in moving chairs and tables safely. Model correct lifting and carrying techniques. At least two children should move tables to prevent injury.
2. During the Session
-
Volume Control:
Staff and children should collaborate to maintain appropriate and comfortable volume levels on headsets. Children should be encouraged to signal if the volume is too loud or uncomfortable. -
Content Review:
Staff must review all audio and visual content beforehand to identify any material that might require discussion or adaptation for the children’s age and sensitivities. -
Health Monitoring:
Pay special attention to children with asthma or other health conditions. Ensure they have access to inhalers and first aid supplies, and provide adequate breaks as needed. -
Movement and Safety:
Monitor children’s movement around the classroom. Make them aware of potential hazards (e.g., cables, furniture edges) and designate spaces to avoid to prevent accidents. -
Behaviour Expectations:
Clearly communicate behaviour guidelines related to the equipment use and movement during the session. Reinforce respectful and safe interaction. -
Brain and Comfort Breaks:
Schedule short breaks (when necessary) to prevent overstimulation, especially for children who may be sensitive to sensory input. -
Personal Space:
Encourage children to give each other enough space when using headsets to avoid accidental bumps or equipment damage.
3. Involving Children in Safety Practices
-
Empower children, especially older ones (NPP Sparks), to assist with safe equipment handling, such as battery changes and furniture movement, under staff supervision.
-
Encourage children to speak up if they feel uncomfortable with volume levels or the content being shared.
-
Promote responsibility by explaining the importance of following safety rules and respecting equipment.
