The National Grid are a leading energy company in the UK, responsible for the transmission of electricity and gas across the country. They are committed to sustainability, STEM education, and inspiring the next generation of engineers.

About Our Partnership 

Our partnership with National Grid brings hands-on STEM learning into schools. Through this collaboration, we provide the now>press>play Experience Reducing Our Carbon Footprint (KS2) to engage pupils in energy and engineering topics. We also arrange visits with National Grid volunteers, allowing students to ask questions and learn about careers in STEM.

Key Objectives:

  • Introduce Year 5 and Year 6 students to STEM careers, particularly in engineering and energy.

  • Support volunteer-led sessions where National Grid staff can share their expertise and inspire students.

  • Encourage schools to embed STEM learning across the curriculum.

  • Provides interactive, curriculum-linked STEM learning for students.

  • Connects pupils with real-world engineering careers.

  • Encourages long-term engagement with STEM through volunteer-led and teacher-supported sessions.


What does the National Grid visit include?

National Grid volunteer visits provide Year 5 and Year 6 pupils with a hands-on introduction to STEM and engineering, offering a fun and practical way to inspire curiosity and explore STEM careers.

Session Overview

  • Duration: Each visit lasts 1 hour, split into 30 minutes for the Experience (Reducing Our Carbon Footprint) and 30 minutes for a Q&A with a National Grid volunteer.

  • Format: Visits can take place either online or in person, depending on volunteer availability.

  • Multiple Sessions: Schools can book a minimum of two sessions, with up to three available if needed.

  • Scheduling: Sessions start after 10 a.m. to fit with volunteer schedules.

What Pupils Experience

  • Interactive Learning: Pupils take part in an immersive adventure, learning how to reduce their own carbon footprint, discovering renewable energy and its different sources and exploring engineering as a job opportunity

  • Q&A with Volunteers: Pupils can ask questions and gain insights into STEM careers directly from National Grid staff.

  • Curriculum Relevance: Sessions are designed to complement the curriculum while providing a memorable, hands-on learning experience.
